This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the 2023 general national budget (PGN) allocated to the education sector, as approved by the Congress of the Republic. Various aspects are examined, including education spending within the PGN, the share of PGN education spending in total expenditure and GDP, the Ministry of National Education (MEN) spending in the PGN, MEN investment spending, and an international comparison of education spending. It highlights that the allocation for education amounted to 54.8 trillion pesos, representing 13.5% of the PGN and being the main spending sector. The MEN budget accounted for 88% of the total allocated for education, with a real decrease of 6% compared to the previous year. Regarding international comparison, Colombia’s education spending as a percentage of GDP is lower than that of other countries in the region such as Chile, Brazil, or Costa Rica, and the spending per student is significantly lower than the OECD average.
